The Story Behind My Most Popular Print: Clifton Sunset

The Unexpected Shot That Became a Best-Seller

Some of the best landscape photography prints come from moments you never planned. That was certainly the case with Clifton Sunset, my most popular fine art print.

It started as a simple test run. I had just picked up a new tripod and wanted to see how it handled in real-world conditions. So, I headed down to Clifton Springs, Victoria, a place well-known among landscape photographers for its iconic old jetty pylons stretching into the calm waters of Port Phillip Bay.

At first, I wasn’t expecting much—just another sunset session, another test shot. But sometimes, nature has other plans.

The Perfect Storm of Light, Water, and Composition

As I set up my gear, I noticed the tide was at the perfect level. Just enough water had receded to expose a rock in the foreground while leaving most of it submerged beneath the clear, glassy surface. The effect was mesmerizing—like the rock was floating between two worlds.

Then, the sunset sky exploded.

Vibrant red, orange, and magenta streaks stretched across the clouds, contrasting against the deep blues of the sky and water. As the sun dipped lower, the reflections on the water became even more vivid, turning the entire scene into a perfect mirror.

And then, of course, there were the iconic Clifton Springs jetty pylons—weathered and worn, yet standing strong as a testament to time. Their jagged forms led the viewer’s eye right into the heart of the scene, creating depth and a natural pathway through the image.

In landscape photography, composition is everything, and this shot had it all:

A dramatic foreground element (the rock)
A strong leading line (the jetty pylons)
A striking color palette (warm vs. cool tones)
Perfect reflections (a landscape photographer’s dream)

At that moment, I knew I had something special.
